When I created the ‘Fire Hydrant’ graphic tee for the Essen Ehm collection, I knew people would start asking: Is the collection all about “flagging” or the “hanky code”?

The answer? Yes and no, but also yes—just not entirely.

This collection is what you make of it. It’s designed to empower you, to let you claim your space and express your individuality. When you connect with the humour or message behind an Essen Ehm design, the tee becomes your canvas—you’re the masterpiece. And yes, we can offer other colours; just reach out.

Yes, the new FLAG tee.

There’s some serious symbolism here. The solid letters spell ‘FAG.’ Add in the bricked ‘L’ and now we have ‘FLAG.’ The ‘L’ and the bricks represent two monumental moments in queer history: the Stonewall riots and the AIDS crisis. Bricks were thrown. Lesbian sisters sat with us as we died.

Which brings us to the third powerful symbol in our history—our PRIDE flag. Over time, this flag has evolved beyond just stripes of colour; it’s become a beacon of visibility, unity, and resilience for our community. Each colour represents a different facet of who we are—whether it’s life, healing, sunlight, or spirit—and together, they tell the story of our journey, our struggles, and our triumphs. The FLAG tee honours this legacy by blending the raw history of Stonewall and the AIDS crisis with the enduring symbol of Pride.
