For the Superstitious:
Many believe that giving a clock as a gift is a bad omen. Stemming from Chinese culture and language. Saying 'giving a clock' (送钟 sòng zhōng /song jong/) sounds exactly like the Chinese words for 'attending a funeral ritual' (送终 sòng zhōng) and thus it is bad luck to gift clocks or watches.
On top of that, clocks and watches also symbolize the running out of time. This is especially true for seniors. Giving a clock or watch as a gift is the biggest no-no in Chinese culture.
However; there may be ways around this. Include something with the clock that your friend will give back to you as payment for the clock. The same superstition surrounds giving knives or sharp objects as gifts as the sharp object symbolized the cutting of ties. The way around that has been suggested to tape a coin to the knife, which the recipient then turns around and gives the coin in payment for the knife received.
I learnt of this superstition around 15 years ago when a, then, realtively new friend gave me a beautiful watch and a knife. The watch was for me and the knife was for me to give back to him to symbolize the cutting of any bad luck, energy or superstitions. He remains one of my closest friends today. A brother.
Just something to think about. Please enjoy. turnipHed.
